FAQ

What are Hong Kong stock market trading hours?
The regular session runs 09:30–12:00 and 13:00–16:00 Hong Kong time (UTC+8), 5.5 hours in total. The opening auction is 09:00–09:30 and the closing auction is 16:00–16:10.
Is the Hong Kong lunch break the same as in mainland A-shares?
No. Hong Kong’s midday break is 12:00–13:00 (1 hour), while mainland A-shares break 11:30–13:00 (1.5 hours). Hong Kong’s afternoon session resumes at 13:00, half an hour earlier in the afternoon than A-shares.
Does Hong Kong close for Christmas and Boxing Day?
Yes. The market is closed all day on December 25 (Christmas) and December 26 (Boxing Day); Christmas Eve (December 24) is a half-day when it falls on a weekday.
Does Hong Kong close for the same number of Chinese New Year days as the mainland?
Not exactly. Hong Kong usually closes for 3 days at Lunar New Year (1st–3rd days, deferred if they fall on a weekend), fewer than the mainland’s 7. The Hong Kong market may trade normally on some days when the mainland is on holiday.
Why aren’t Hong Kong and mainland holidays fully aligned?
Hong Kong follows its own General Holidays Ordinance, while the mainland follows the national holiday arrangement. Both observe the major traditional festivals (Chinese New Year, Qingming, Mid-Autumn, National Day) but for different numbers of days, and Hong Kong also observes Western holidays (Christmas, Easter) that the mainland does not.
